Structural Steel Components

Structural steel forms the backbone of many different types of building projects. A longtime favorite for commercial construction, structural steel is quickly becoming a new staple for residential developments and more architecturally demanding structures. It offers nearly unmatchable strength, durability, cost-effectiveness and productivity benefits. Steel frames can be combined with almost any other building material, such as concrete, brick or even glass.

There are many grades of steel available, though structural steel contains more carbon than other alloys to make it stronger. Structural steel is a great framing material because it’s resistant to corrosion, rust, mold, flames, and other types of damage. Steel’s high tensile strength and ductility make it an ideal solution to frame buildings in areas with severe winds and earthquakes.

If you’re using structural steel to frame your building, there are four main types of frame structures to choose from:

  • Steel building frame structure — This type of steel building frame structure consists of steel beams and columns that can withstand vertical and horizontal loads. They are rigid and connect to form a flexible layout, so these structures can easily withstand high wind loads and earthquakes. Steel building frame structures are used to construct high-rise buildings, super-high-rise buildings, multistory buildings, conference centers and commercial office buildings. This system is divided into four subtypes: frame structure, frame bracing structure, frame shear wall structure and frame tube structure.
  • Steel portal frame structure — Steel portal frame structures are what may come to mind when you think of an airplane hangar. They are constructed from hot-rolled steel and can be erected very quickly, thanks to their straightforward design. Steel portal frame structures are used for low-rise or single-story structures with wide, open floor plans. Some common applications are warehouses, barns, and other structures that need large, open spaces at a low cost.
  • Steel truss structure — Steel truss structures are made of beams or rods with hinges at either end. These are grouped into plane or space trusses, used to form two- and three-dimensional configurations, respectively. These trusses are lightweight and they can efficiently span large distances. Finally, steel truss structures use upper and lower chords, so they often use less steel compared to other types of structures.
  • Steel grid structure — Steel grid structures are interconnected rods that form a grid pattern. Just like trusses, they can form two-dimensional or three-dimensional shapes. Steel grid structures distribute stress across the framework, so they can be a great choice for areas with seismic activity. Lightweight but strong, they can be ideal for gyms, exhibition halls and theaters.
